Here's a true story:
One of my clients (I'll call him Eddy) attended a wedding of an old friend of his wife's. He knew no one, except his wife, of course. Eddy saw this as a good opportunity to work on some of his newly acquired networking skills with people he'd most likely never see again. A man at Eddy's table asked him what he did for a living and Eddy reverted back to his old "this is what I do, this is my service" speech.
